Urban sustainability Some 80% of the European Union’s population live in urban areas where the
effects of many environmental, social and economic challenges are most keenly
felt. European cities and towns are confronted by a range of complex pressures
and impacts that demand more sophisticated, integrated approaches to planning
and management. Engagement by a wide community of research professions is
required to find solutions.
URBAN-NET‘s core focus for research will be integrated approaches to issues
relating to urban sustainability. Specific areas for research will emerge by
identifying common strategic issues with an emphasis on the interactions between
existing urban research and new emerging priorities. The results and experience
of existing European and national research forums and networks will inform
URBAN-NET’s development.
Current urban sustainability priorities include: urban management and
governance, integrated spatial planning, economic growth and competitiveness,
social inclusion, environmental stewardship and quality, health and wellbeing,
green spaces, crime and security, and accessibility to services.
